CTU Researchers at Analysis of Electron Beam Welds in 3D-Printed Steel

Published: 29. 04. 2026

From 7 to 10 April 2026, a consortium meeting of mobility project No. 8X25015 – Electron Beam Weldability and Properties of 316LSi Stainless Steel Printed with Laser Metal Deposition – was held at the Institute of Materials, Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Trnava. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.

The research team from the Department of Manufacturing Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, was led by Dr. Miroslav Sahul. Other CTU participants included Assoc. Prof. Marie Kolaříková, Ing. Tomáš Gurčík, Ing. Tomáš Němec, Ing. Jakub Karmáček, and Ing. Adam Novotný.
From the University of Montenegro, Prof. Špiro Ivošević and Dr. Draško Kovač participated. Graz University of Technology was represented by Assoc. Prof. Norbert Enzinger, Dr. Fernando Gustavo Warchomicka, and Assoc. Prof. Petra Spörk-Erdely.

During the meeting, results of analyses of weld joints in corrosion-resistant steel 316LSi produced by Laser Metal Deposition were presented. Significant results in microstructure and mechanical properties were achieved. Participants agreed on the continuation of the analysis of prepared weld samples.

Participants were warmly welcomed by Dr. Martin Sahul and Dr. Barbora Ludrovcová. The program also included guided tours of the Institute of Materials facilities, in particular the Laboratory of Structural Analyses and the Laboratory of Thermophysical Property Measurements (Dr. Marián Drienovský). Laboratories of the Institute of Production Technologies were also presented, including the Centre of Excellence for 5-Axis Machining (Dr. Tomáš Vopát, Assoc. Prof. Ladislav Morovič) and the Laboratory of Arc and Plasma Technologies (Dr. Marián Pavlík).
